And so here we are, the first Thursday of June, marking the opening of another edition of our #1 festival – Barcelona’s Primavera Sound. Set by the beach and still close to the city, it’s packed with so many artists that the festival’s motto is ‘Choose Your Own Musical Adventure.’
This week we’ve already had shows from 80s-Industrialists-turned-apocalyptic-folk ensemble Current 93, smooth RnB via Essex from Blood Orange, Cara Delavingne debut her new solo material and faggoty noise rock from Model/Actriz – all as part of the festival’s extra perk – A La Ciutat.
Another artist who will be bringing rainbows, sunshine and love to the Schwarzkopf stage this year is Gelli Haha. The producer, songwriter and performer brings everything to the stage including trampolines, acrobatics and some most excellent art pop from her 2025 album Switcheroo. She will also be playing an A La Ciutat show this Sunday at La [2] Apolo before her London debut show on 17th June at Hoxton Hall. Loverboy caught up with the club kid to find out more…
Hey Gelli, we’re a week away from Primavera Sound BCN and the weather forecast is rain and thunderstorms. Haha… are you prepared for all scenarios? Mitski’s show two years ago with lightning as the backdrop was pretty fierce. What weather would you like? I feel rainy weather may even have more possibilities for ensembles?
Hiiii omg I am so excited! Let it rain baby!!! But for real no matter the weather we are gonna be having a blast, we’ll just stay under our parachute if we must. If I could choose the weather I would say partly kloudy and like 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
I’ve read you go full-out for a show. What can people expect from a Gelli Haha gig?
People can expect some mystery, some toys, some red, some dance, some drama. They can expect to enjoy themselves.
What Spanish/Catalan energy will you be tapping into for this show? I feel red and yellow, the colours of the Spanish flag are very Gelli Haha, but flags can be problematic!! Or will we be hearing ‘Spain’ and other Spanish themed words in ‘spit’ perhaps?
Yesss we share the same love for rojo! I might slip some español into Spit for sure.
The festival is pretty good in terms of toilet facilities but will you be distributing jars for everyone in reference to ‘Piss Artist’?
BYOJ 🙂
For those new to your music, which three artists from the Primavera Sound line up do you think could fit in the Gelliverse? And who are you excited to see?
Gorillaz, Panda Bear, and Addison Rae lol
You’ll be playing Primavera Porto the weekend after. What will you be doing in between? What are you excited to do in Portugal apart from playing?
We are playing a headline show in Berlin in between Barcelona and Porto. My mom and my sister will be with me in Porto so I’m excited to spend some time with them – I’ve never been to Portugal so I’m looking forward to it!
What are essential things to bring, see or experience at a festival? What is Gelli Haha’s advice?
A carefree open heart, a red flashlight, and some dancing shoes. My advice is listen to your heart and you’ll find the truth 🙂
I think it’s hard out there in the world for female producers to get recognition for their work. In a live set up is showing that part of your craft as important as the spectacle of the show? How do you showcase it?
I don’t really think about what people think of me, I’m more concerned with creating a unique experience.
You also have your London debut coming up. How are you feeling about the London show?
I am ecstatic, it is going to be so fun!
Lastly we are named after the biggest song of 2001 so always ask what is your favourite Mariah Carey song and why? I feel you might like the Fantasy remix sampling Tom Tom Club?
Yeah I really do love “Fantasy” but I also grew up listening to The Emancipation of Mimi.
Switcheroo is out now.
Gelli Haha plays Primavera Sound and A La Ciutat this weekend.
