In Conversation: Molly Burch & Cynthia Lee Fontaine

Loverboy already knew we had a couple of things in common with drag race legend Cynthia Lee Fontaine – we’re both partial to a Madonna lip-sync while dressed as a torero and we love a cucu moment! But it turns out we have even more in common after discovering she is a fan of our new fave singer-songwriter Molly Burch.

Molly has already released three albums, including a Christmas one, and right now is preparing for the release of album #4 – Romantic Images. In the meantime she has just dropped the video for her brand new single, ‘Took A Minute’ which finds her telling her lover how happy she is that they finally found each other. Aw…love is real!

For the video, the RPDR mega-fan contacted Cynthia Lee Fontaine and asked her to appear in the video with her. So Loverboy thought we’d catch up with both of them to find out more….

How did you first discover each other?

Molly: I discovered Cynthia by watching Rupaul’s Drag Race and I’ve been a fan ever since!
Cynthia: I discovered Molly through social media. We found each other through Instagram. I remember we were watching season 13 of Drag Race and we were chatting about it. That’s how our friendship started too as well.

Molly what drew you to Cynthia?
Molly: I was drawn to her kindness and sense of humor. On TV, Cynthia seems like she has the warmest heart and in reality it’s true times infinity. Truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting! And she’s HILARIOUS. I knew I wanted to have a drag performer for the video and then a light bulb lit up in my mind when I remembered she lived in Austin (like me). She was the perfect person for the video because I wanted comedy, camp and glam — which she embodies. So I DM’d her on Instagram and the rest is history! I hope we’re forever friends. Love you, girl!

Cynthia was there something in the song ‘Took A Minute’ that you connected with in particular?
Cynthia: To be very honest with you, her voice. She brings a lot of references from great eras from the past. But also, the lyrics ! Because honestly, it took a minute to find each other. Besides, Molly and I are from Austin Texas.

How did the creative process come about for the video?
Molly: When I first had the idea in the fall of 2020, I was still very much in Covid safety mode so I thought it would just be a lip syncing video where we’d shoot everyone separately etc. But when we were actually in pre-production we had all been fully vaccinated so we were able to add a narrative and we were able to shoot scenes together. Jordan Moser (the director) and I collaborated on the plot and when we explained the concept to Cynthia she was down for it all and nailed everything we were dreaming of and more. I did encourage a full kiss between her and my boyfriend Dailey but that didn’t happen. Haha…

How did you both approach lip-syncing this song?
Molly: Cynthia is a master lip syncing so I cannot compete! Sashay away to me! But I love lip syncing and making videos. Is it weird lip-syncing as a singer? It’s not weird at all. My approach definitely depends on the song. For “Took A Minute” I wanted the vibe to be campy and have fun movement.
Cynthia: Personally, for me it was a natural process. We both were very excited to do this music video and also the campiness involved in it. And I do believe, for Molly, it wasn’t  hard at all –  she is a natural drag queen! Haha…

When it comes to performance style, which women are on both your inspiration lists?
Molly: I’ve always been drawn to all caps DIVAS. Mariah Carey, Judy Garland, Madonna, Whitney Houston, etc. I used to be very shy on stage but now I just channel that energy and have so much fun.
Cynthia: For me, Celine Dion, Cher, Ednita Nazario, Sarah Brightman, Carol Burnett , Mariah Carey and my mom. The talent and fun that these ladies have, they influence my style and also the way I perform on stage.

When you are looking for clothes to perform in, what are the similarities/differences in your choices? Are you both looking for a reveal moment?!
Molly: Fun question! Hmm…Cynthia and I love a color coordinated moment for sure. We love drama and glam. She always looks hot. I’ve personally never had a reveal moment but I hope one day I do. When I perform I love to dress up and feel glam but also feel comfortable which to me is tights, some sort of mini baby doll dress and heels. I love color, organza, dramatic sleeves, modern but a hint of vintage. My everyday look is usually very casual. Right now I’m wearing a 3XL hoodie and sneakers.
Cynthia: I think we both like to go retro at some point when it comes to our fashion choices.  We both like vintage and glam.

Have either of you been watching Drag Race Espana? As both aficionados of drag race – which country would you like to see have a drag race next?
Molly: I’ve seen the first episode and I love it! I need to catch up. Would love to see Drag Race Korea! Any and all! Can’t get enough.
Cynthia: Yes I’m watching Drag Race Spain and All Stars 6 (Team Sagittaria and Team Sonique) and I would love to see a Latin Drag Race, Puerto Rico Drag Race, and Mexico Drag Race. By the way, I am excited for Italia Drag race!!!

Finally we are named after the biggest selling single of 2001, so we always ask what is your favourite Mariah song?
Molly: I’m a huge Mariah fan so it’s hard to just say one song…I love “My All” and “With You”.
Cynthia: I met her on Andy Cohen’s show Watch What Happens Live and she was a sweetheart! I love all her music, but my favorite song of all time is “Hero”. Why? It is a very inspiring lyric and so encouraging!
