COBRAH: ‘I wanna do everything and everyone!!’

When it comes to musical artistes, it’s a known fact that Sweden is incapable of producing anything other than iconic, triple threat, boots the house down, legends. So prepare to obsess over Stockholm’s latest export, COBRAH.

COBRAH is preparing to drop her self-titled EP but for now she is feeding us her puss – literally! New single ‘GOOD PUSS’ goes in hard and will have you feeling horny @ home with its tight beats and up front lyrics. Her music is difficult to label, something even COBRAH finds it hard to do – but you can always be sure that each track will be *chef’s kiss*.

Loverboy sat down with the singer to discuss self-releasing her material, gay workout music and the genius that is Nina Hagen.

Hi COBRAH. First things first, how are you and what can you see right now? Give us the deets!
Hi Loverboy! (Btw that’s one of my favourite words.) I’m at home right now. It’s 2am and I’m watching a gameplay of Little Nightmares 2. I can also look out my window where there’s a canal and all the city lights reflecting in it.

Sounds cute! Secondly, congratulations on your upcoming EP. It’s released through your own label GAGBALL. Why did you decide to self-release?
I self-release because I need to take my time working on the music and the overall aesthetic before I can let other people in. Making the EP I’ve learned a whole lot and now know how I want to present myself and the music, so for the future I definitely plan on working with a label.

Do you think the artist’s “dream” of being signed to a major label are changing with time?
I think why artists are still so reliant on labels is because label work takes away time from being creative. Labels are also gatekeepers to radio, Spotify etc and they have the big bucks. I don’t think being signed to a label means as much as it did before because of the internet. I hope more people dare to be out of the box and not sign right away because creative freedom is one of the best parts of being indie.

How did you decide on the label name GAGBALL – and in fact, how did you settle on the name COBRAH too?!
Both names were “in the moment” decisions. Like I thought it was cool to name the label GAGBALL because being an artist is the opposite of having a gagball and you can name a company whatever you want (kinda) so why not?? For COBRAH I took it from my favourite song ‘IDFKA’. I wanted something metal-band sounding and gender neutral and then I added the H because then it combines most of the letters in my full name.

What else can we expect from the EP? What genre would you call it?
That’s the most difficult question I get! I don’t know what to call it!! When people ask I just say ‘Alternative Electro Pop’. But it’s a constant creative battle I have in my head. Honestly I don’t know what type of music I make, I just go with the creative flow. But you can always expect bass, minimalism and attitude. I’ve tried new genres and experimented with both bass house and bubblegum pop!

Have you played with other genres and released music under aliases before arriving at this point? I imagine creating music is always about growth and moving forward…
Yes, that’s also a scary part about being an artist and making music, you’re displaying to the world your creative growth. I always try to think that my current projects are meant for practicing for my next project. It takes some of the anxiety off.
And yes, I have played with A LOT of other genres, haha. I was really into making Swedish indie/folk music for a while (thank God I didn’t). But maybe if I was born in another time I’d make some heartfelt singer songwriter music on a pump organ.

Speaking of moving forward, what boxes do you want to tick as COBRAH? Is it to win GRAMMYS? Is it to see a fan with a tattoo of your face? Is it to play in outer space…?
Oh yes, the GRAMMY will always be a big box to tick. I also wanna do a world tour, be A-listed on the radio and invited to the MET gala! Haha. Basically I wanna do everything and everyone!! Living the limitless life!

The new single ‘GOOD PUSS’ sounds like a brilliant unabashed track about vagina! Where were you when you wrote the lyrics?
I was in the studio finally writing again and Gusten had made an awful track that had this Eurodisco vibe to it. It was the end of the day, I was really tired and just wanted to go out in the sun and party!! But we had to make something! So I was like, okay let me just write whatever comes to mind and record it so I can be done for the day and go party, and that was the chorus to ‘Good puss’! We really vibed to it and changed the track completely (thank heavens) and that’s how it all started!

I’ve seen some fans comment on Reddit saying ‘COBRAH is the granddaughter of SOPHIE!’ How do these comparisons make you feel? Did you get chance to meet SOPHIE?
I don’t know about that, I feel like I’m just doing me and if I remind people of SOPHIE it’s an honor, but I don’t like to be compared to other artists in the sense that I don’t want fans to expect me to make a certain type of music. I unfortunately never met SOPHIE and although I see why people feel similarities I want to be seen as me.

Someone else said ‘I’m convinced COBRAH makes music specifically for gay workout playlists.’ What do you make of this conspiracy theory?!
HAHAHA YEEEEES! Omg here’s the tea, I have actually made a workout track on the EP that’s literally about working out. And I like to listen to the songs while I work out! Maybe that’s a new genre?? Gay workout music. It’s definitely a playlist on Spotify I wanna curate.

Styling is super important to you and I know you style yourself. What sort of icons feature on your moodboard? Would launching a clothing line or launching fetish wear be something you would like to do in future?
Yes to all of it! Nina Hagen is someone I go to a lot of the time, I just vibe her whole output. But in general I try to stay away from too much moodboarding (and yes there’s such a thing, haha.) I would want to make like a special curated and designed BDSM kit for some queer ass lovin’. And a clothing line would be the a dream come true too!

I’ve seen Laganja Estranja commenting on a couple of your posts. Are you a drag race fan? Who has been your favourite so far? Do you go to the drag scene in Sweden?
Yes! Laganja reached out to me and helped me to get a scholarship to visit LA! I’ve felt very close to the drag community because we both live for styling and performance, in that way our cultures collide. I’ve also seen a lot of drag queens perform to my music and I love every minute of it. Me and Adore Delano are soul sisters but she doesn’t know it YET (because we’re both Libras).

Lastly we are named after the biggest selling single of 2001 so we always ask what is your favourite Mariah Carey track?
‘All I Want for Christmas is You’!! Whenever you hear that song you just know that Christmas season is finally here.

‘GOOD PUSS’ is out now.
COBRAH’s self-titled EP is dropping soon.
