REVIEW: Diabolic

Out today is Diabolic the Australian-produced indie film that combines two of our favourite things in cinema – the horror genre with queer-storytelling, specifically tales where the LGBT character is forced to live their life inauthentically and consequently wreaks their revenge on society with maximum chaos and carnage!

Written, produced and directed by Daniel J. Phillips, the film is set in Mormon Country, USA and opens with our protagonist Elise being baptized in a flashback sequence. While being exorcised of her inner demons, the cult elders call the name of the mysterious Larue, thinking the power of her presence will cure Elise of her ‘darkness’ only for this spirit to enter the girl’s body…

No more spoilers will be found here but there is a strong queer plotline to be enjoyed. Sadly it’s not enough to make it a Queer classic or even a Camp one – we found the plot confusing and things were left unexplained. The cinematography was on point keeping things bleak in the current day while contrasting that with Elise’s past. Demonic is far from perfect but it’s always gratifying to see queer representation on screen.

Diabolic will be available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital from 25th May
