We Talk to Dean Monroe

Don’t get it twisted, kids. There are amateur porn actors out there who earn coins through cam4. Then there are porn stars who sign contracts with studios. There are porn icons who can bring the boys to the yard if they host a night at Room Service. But there will always be those porn LEGENDS you’ve lusted after since you saw them on your first ever porno.
Yes, Cross Country II was Loverboy’s first porno and although it starred Erik Rhodes and Matthew Rush, it was Dean who caught our eye. So you can imagine how upset we were when he retired last year. Thankfully, he’s back in the game…..

Last time we spoke you had just announced your retirement. What’s happened since?
That was a strange period thinking back to it now. I guess I was kind of fed up with what I saw happening in the industry, plus personally I had lost the excitement and lacked the patience to get through another scene. I think I bowed out at the right time. And in the year I’ve been away I have not missed it or regretted it.

You’re returning with Answered Prayers, right? What drew you back?
I met Jake Jaxson in NYC while filming for Lucas at The Black Party. We spoke about a project he was working on and how he really wanted me to be a part of it. I then announced my retirement. After that we spoke again and he showed me the material he had already shot for the Answered Prayers series. I was blown away by the quality and the fact he had approached it like a movie, not just a run of the mill porn flick. I’ve always been attracted to projects that go beyond just the sex in terms of creativity. I immediately agreed to come out of retirement and be part of it.

Will you be approaching things any differently this time?
Well, since my first appearance in Answered Prayers I haven’t really looked to work with anyone else. In fact while answering this interview, I’m in the process of filming the final part of the Cocky Boys series. I really have no desire to film with the mainstream porn studios. I don’t really care for a lot of the politics and mind-set in the industry right now.

Is there anyone you won’t be working with?
I wouldn’t work for anyone who doesn’t use condoms and doesn’t openly test models before a shoot. People might say, ‘Why did you shoot for Treasure Island?’ Well, again I remind people I only did an oral scene for them and they actually ask models for HIV status and then pair them accordingly.

Has there been any further fall-out from your Treasure Island scenes?
It has all calmed down just as I knew it would. The fans who follow us in the industry may have an opinion about us as performers but ultimately they just want to see us fuck and get off on it. That’s what really matters to them. Any other issues are quickly forgotten. When you’ve worked as long as I have in the industry you learn to take most criticism with a pinch of salt.

You studied fashion right? That piece you posted from your Graduate show on Twitter is ace. Do you have any desire to pursue that?
At one point in my life, fashion was my whole world. I lived and breathed it. However our lives take very different paths sometimes. I know if I had followed a career in fashion I would have been very successful but I chose otherwise. I have never regretted any choices I have made in my life.

Are you working on anything else right now?
I’m working on something completely different. A building project that I’m so excited about. Don’t want to give too much away but I’ll be filming the process. My new home is a secret location…
