Review: Midnight Special

We love a good sleeper hit. They come out of nowhere, catch you off guard and totally blow you away. We say that but Jurassic World is obviously the exception. Chris Pratt & dinosaurs? That was always going to be a winner. Back to Midnight Special….

Besides being the very definition of a sleeper hit, there are many things we like about this film. One being that it feels like it starts halfway through – Director Jeff Nichols just figures you’ll catch up. For a film with a relatively simple plot, this really helps make it more complex.

The film could not have been timed better either because although we have enjoyed the short return of The X Files, very few of the episodes had serious, sci-fi drama. There was a tad too much smug back slapping for our liking – although we enjoyed that too. But Midnight Special feels just like an episode from the show’s mid-90s peak. We’re talking Tooms level of good here.

Midnight Special is fast paced, thrilling, emotional and it makes you think at the end. You can’t really ask for more from a film than that, right?

The acting is superb with Michael Shannon putting in a excellent performance as a father who will risk anything for his son. He brought us to tears. Kirsten Dunst was great too – it feels like it’s been awhile since we’ve seen her in anything so it’s good to have her back. Oh and shout out to Joel Edgerton’s butt which looks particularly great throughout.

Midnight Special is out 8th April.
