Review: Boxx

BOXX is a fictional web series that is written by Yrsa Daley-Ward and directed and produced by Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor about two black trans artists who are making a documentary about their lives. We follow their experiences of negotiating family, friends and lovers, including the sticky intricacies of loving relationships outside of romance and monogamy. Osko and Roen share an art studio and Ahrah sometimes shares Roen’s bed but doesn’t want a romantic relationship, instead describing what they are as friends. When part of the documentary involves talking with ex-lovers about their experiences of their ex’s transition, Roen complicates matters by rekindling with an old flame.

In short episodes, Boxx manages to convey the complexities of everyday life when you are living outside of the ‘norm’ especially when, through your work, you are putting your world under a self-analyzing magnifying glass.

Episode One can be seen on the Boxx Website and on Youtube, subscribe to the channel to watch weekly as the tale unfolds.
