Queerama: A Century of Gay Rights & Desires on Film

This May, Loverboy will be packing its bags and making its third pilgrimage to the holy gay mecca that is San Francisco. Every time we go we can be sure that we will sit in a bar, strike up a conversation with a stranger and learn something new about our queer history. Maybe it’s being a tourist but this is just something that does not happen in London. Although they are on their way to funding a new Queer museum so that’s a start.

But what we are trying to say is that in this time of Trump and Alt-Right, it’s important to remember our story. in some countries we may have rights now, and in others those rights may be slowly being taken away, so we must not forget where we have come from and how we can continue to fight and be seen. One way the Queer community has always expressed itself is through art – and cinema specifically. Enter new documentary Queerama.

Director Daisy Asquith has mined the British Film Institute and created the most beautiful documentary that, ‘travels through a century of gay experience, encompassing persecution and prosecution, injustice, love and desire, identity, secrets, forbidden encounters, sexual liberation and pride.’ Plus the soundtrack is pretty badass with some artists we’ve featured in the past like John Grant and issue 2 cover star Hercules & Love Affair’s Andy Butler.

Queerama is out now on DVD and comes packed with extras including an interview with the Director and even a mini-featurette, named ‘Rosebud.’ But this isn’t a Raging Stallion release so get your head outta that gutter, gurl.

We have a Queerama DVD and poster up for grabs so email Michael@LoverboyMagazine.com with the answer to this question AND YOUR ADDRESS,
