When Loverboy spoke with Shura earlier this year, we discussed Dungeon Synth, gaming and the armour motif for her new album I Got Too Sad For My Friends.
The British singer-songwriter continues to use the aesthetic in the video for the latest single from the project, ‘America‘. Juxtaposing the strength of armour with the delicacy of angel wings to show the forces required to survive in the world right now.
Shura says about the video, ’10 years ago I made the music video for Touch with a group of friends. It felt like an optimistic moment in time for those of us involved and for the many people who would go on to discover it. Perhaps naively, It felt that things would only continue to get better… In some ways that is true, we have more queer representation in film and music than we had in 2014. That being said, the world we live in now feels very different and it is not the world I imagined this song would land in when I wrote it 5 years ago. So my friend Charlotte and I set out to make a video that reflects the moment we find ourselves in – with the same spirit we approached the video for Touch – with a queer cast, queer friends and a majority queer crew, we decided to create something beautiful.’
Director Charlotte Croft says, ‘Shot on 35mm film. The video for ‘America’ explores themes of strength, resilience and defiance in the face of increasing political oppression of queer and trans communities. The visuals represent both vulnerability and empowerment, liberation and resistance, capturing the song’s themes of navigating personal identity amidst growing societal and political adversity.’
