Mr K!: ‘Caps were a strong fetish for me.’

Mr K! is one of Barcelona’s most popular DJs on the LGBT scene. From making his own mixes and bootlegs, he’s now expanding & releasing his first single, ‘No Shame’ with an album in the works! Loverboy speaks with Mr. K! about his fetish for caps and his sick relationship with Christmas…

I know you as a DJ, mixing other people’s music but now you’re stepping out with your own music. Is this something you want to pursue?
I would love to take the leap to live sets, but ‘would need a lot of own production for this. It is still too early to take that step and maybe in a near future if I can be working in an album, I could start leaving the turntables aside to start building a more complete format. I hope it is soon because I would love to.

You recently released the single, ‘No Shame’. Tell us about what inspired it?
Behind ‘No Shame’ there is a lot of feminine inspiration, artists like Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Tove Lo or Kylie Minogue. I wanted to not only make you dance but make you feel sexy and powerful. In terms of production artists like Duke Dumont, Marting Solveig or Sofi Tukker are also great references for me.

After ‘No Shame’ what do you have planned regarding releasing future music?
I am currently working on my first EP entirely in Spanish with national and international artists such as Karma Cereza, vocalist of Muéveloreina. If everything goes as expected at the end of the year we can already hear some previews. I am very excited about this project because we are experimenting with new sounds that are quite far from my previous releases.

Was there a particular moment, event that inspired ‘No Shame’?
Not really, with Demmy Sober we knew from the first moment that we didn’t want to talk about love or broken relationships.

What would you like to come as a result from releasing ‘No Shame’?
“No Shame” is a manifesto, is an attitude. We wanted to express that we are free to do what we want to do. We have to value our freedom and that has to makes us stronger and more proud.

How would you describe Spain’s relationship with the LGBT community?
Spain seems very modern but it is not, and now less than ever. Over the years we have achieved many rights in this country but there are currently political forces that are spreading homophobia. I personally feel angry and a little scared when I see that there are people with power who, after everyone has a built path, want to take away from you what is already yours. I am not going to hide who I am and who I love a who I love, whoever or whatever that is.  I am not going to allow anyone try to make me embarrassed again and I don’t think they’re gonna get it.

You have become known for your collection of caps too. Tell us, how did this start?
Since I was a teenager I used them, it always was a very strong fetish … I used to put my eyes first on a boy with a cap that without it, is something instantaneous. And I’m keep it doing it. I currently have more than 30 caps at home, some of my friends think that I have a problem. Come to think of it, the same thing happens with sneakers and socks….ups!

Loverboy is named after the Mariah Carey song. So we always ask everyone, what is your favourite Mariah Carey song? “All I want for Christmas is you” because like her I have a sick relationship with Christmas. I love it !!!!
