Loverboy Issue #3: Dear Michelle…

She’s appeared on the greatest selling soundtrack of all time. She actually received that cease and desist from Madonna. She is officially RuPaul’s right hand woman. And now, Loverboy is honoured to have Michelle Visage as our official Agony Aunt for our third issue. (You can grab a copy here.)  Here are a couple of our favourite dilemmas, but you can read more in our new issue and don’t forget, as if you could, Michelle’s new book The Diva Rules is out now!

Dear Michelle,
I don’t drink much, but when I do, I binge which is even worse. So now I’m trying to just be sober. I can handle it when everyone’s wasted because no one notices, but it’s harder when everyone’s buying rounds and you have to say, ‘Coke, please.’ How did you do it? Help!
Michael, New York
The thing is, you’re a really different person when you drink, so you may not actually like people when you’re sober or they may not like you. It’s starting out on a lie. I’ve helped friends in the past by saying, ‘This does not look good on you. You want a career. What are you doing?’ I help by being a Mum figure. I’m the moral compass. But when people come to me for help with their alcoholism, I want them to get actual help.
I’ve never been a drinker, I’ve been drunk four times in my life and my last alcoholic drink was at 21. I wanted to be a force to be reckoned with and realised that being a wasted mess was not going to cut it. But if you’re not going to drink, train yourself to drink water or don’t drink anything! Get something to eat instead. I mean what is it with this oral fixation?! I guess that’s a whole other subject…

Dear Michelle,
Me and my boyfriend started a Instagram account together and we’ve built a pretty good following. There’s business potential there. But I’m beginning to feel like I am the one posing in his shadow. I still love my boyfriend and I love seeing our photos get Likes and Comments. But in the night I get pangs of self-doubt and feel I am in his shadow. How should I deal with them?
Daniel, Berlin
Sweetheart, you have to deal with you. This has nothing to do with anybody else but you. Your boyfriend is not superior, he loves you for who you are. You are so beautiful. I haven’t seen you and already I can tell how beautiful you are. We are just the way we are supposed to be. Yeah, we can go to the gym, diet and have botox. There are lots of rules about it in The Diva Rules. But seriously it’s about finding your inner strength and sparkle. You are just as fabulous as your man. People love both of you. And by the way, don’t ever read the comments. The comments have nothing to do with you and everything to do with the person writing them.
