Artist of the Year: Orville Peck

Only today Loverboy was listening to the radio, hearing a caller say these revelatory words, ‘We need to stop saying Britain and call our country the United Kingdom again. We need to come together and not be so divisive.’ But who could have predicted that more than an any artist in 2019, a lonesome queer cowboy, named Orville Peck would embody this much-needed message and set out on the near-impossible task of healing the world?

When Loverboy spoke with Orville earlier this year, he told us, ‘At my shows I get conservative, straight, white men, in their fifties that maybe voted for Trump. But they will be standing next to a drag queen, or a trans person covered in tattoos. In this day and age we’re taught that your political views have to encapsulate who you are. There is such a focus on dividing us all. But I am more interested in the things we all have in common than the things that set us apart.’

Some readers predictably chimed in and disagreed with his message of unity but we were 100% here for it and so were a lot of others. Whether it was on the cover of countless publications, selling out a never-ending world tour or providing the soundtrack to TV shows like Watchmen, Orville was everywhere with his groovy country tunes and stories of love. This week he dropped the video for his latest single, ‘Nothing Fades Like The Light.’ Get into it below…
