Boy Harsher are back with ‘Tough Luck (When You Don’t Call)‘, the latest taste of their forthcoming album Get Mean, out 18 September. It’s a suitably bittersweet return, pairing sparkly disco beats with Jae Matthews’ unmistakably bruised, heartbroken delivery.
The beat is glossy, but Matthews cuts straight through it with that low, worn-out drawl, giving the whole thing a strange sense of tension. It feels caught between wanting to disappear into the night and having far too much on your mind to actually enjoy it.
That push and pull runs through Get Mean, a new album centred on love, loss and survival. Across it, Boy Harsher seem interested in what happens when those things get messy — when the beautiful bits and the ugly bits start occupying the same space.
Boy Harsher play UK this November December. For more details see www.boyharsher.com
