NEW: Sweeping Promises – ‘Rapture, Or…’

You Say I Romanticize, the bangin’, brattish new album from Kansas art-rock punk duo Sweeping Promises is out now via Sub Pop, with the group dropping a video for their latest single. ‘Rapture, Or…’ sees them slip into a particularly cool, low-slung groove with a soaring chorus.

With Lira Ramer singing in a lower, almost deadpan register and guitars that wouldn’t sound out of place rattling around a grimy New York bar, there’s a touch of Blondie cool and Strokes-style swagger to the track. But, naturally, Sweeping Promises make it their own: tense, wiry and just a little bit feral. “It’s one of our poppier songs, ever,” they add. To make those already-loud vocals even bigger, they double-tracked Lira’s voice in their tiled bathroom — their own DIY “cathedral”. The result is suitably huge: intimate, slightly ridiculous, and gloriously over-the-top.

Catch Sweeping Promises on tour across the US from now through November, and get into the album while it’s fresh: it’s bratty, weird, poppy and very, very alive.
