George Alley – ‘The Holly and the Ivy’

The Philadelphia based artist George Alley has released a new interpretation of the traditional English carol The Holly and the Ivy, recasting the familiar hymn as something darker and more unsettled. Moving between moments of stark restraint and swelling intensity, the track blends horns and electronica with echoes of 1960s proto-punk—channeling the ritualistic atmosphere associated with the Velvet Underground, the Doors, and Patti Smith.

Arranged and produced with longtime collaborator Ian Romer, the recording treats the holiday less as celebration than invocation. The Holly and the Ivy is out now on streaming platforms, with a visual accompaniment available on YouTube
