YEE HAW

A queer night celebrating everything country, honkytonk, cowgirl camp and Dolly Parton, you say? Uh, yeah, Loverboy’s Fallon Gold is most definitely in. We spoke with co-organizer Emily about YEE HAW: A Night of Glamour and Country Divas.

Tell us what we can expect at YEE HAW.
At YEE HAW you can expect high hair, hot dogs and hay bales, plus lots of campy country sounds from Porter Wagoner, Loretta Lynn and Dolly obviously, oh and tequila sunrises

I know it seems obvious, but why country?
I suppose it’s a little bit self-indulgent, really. Personally, I love all things western and I love a themed night out but I just think it’s super fun. The music is great and country music has the best hair.

Country is very queer and very femme queer. And it’s very camp. Camp isn’t usually associated with queer women and I think that’s wrong because there are so many of us camp queer women out there. Is Yee Haw a way to put queer femme camp country glamour on the map?
To be honest, I don’t know that many queer campy women. I know they are out there and I want to meet them all!! I want us campy queer women to get together and have a good time. Vout-O-Reenee’s is an amazing venue it’s decorated like a 1950’s boudoir and it’s in the crypt of a church, if that isn’t the place for all the campy queer femmes to get together, dress up and enjoy themselves I don’t know where is!

Dolly Parton is the patron saint of queerness: discuss
She’s been encrusted with rhinestones for over half a century, surely that deserves a sainthood?

What other queer gods and goddesses will we be worshipping at YEE HAW?
Doris Day, Marlene Dietrich (in Destry Rides Again) Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Porter Wagoner, Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson, John Wayne, The Lone Ranger, Kenny Rodgers, Cher (circa gypsies tramps and thieves), Bobbie Gentry, Bonnie Lou, Lorne Greene, The Collins Kids, etc etc

There are notoriously fewer and fewer gay spaces with places being closed down, but we’re fighting back with pop ups and our DIY spirit. Yet queer women have always been underprovided for anyway. Yee Haw isn’t just a stupendously fun night out, it’s actually politically vital, isn’t it?
Well yeah, loads of places have been closed down and it’s such a shame. It’s important the queer community have places to go where they feel safe. I mean, the event isn’t strictly for queer women it’s just for anyone who likes campy country and western. But I am a queer woman and so is my partner so we understand that as queer women we are a little invisible, even more so both of us being femme. It’s important for us to do stuff, put on events, whatever.  Just do something to say HELLO I AM HERE and have lots of fun while doing it, of course.

What do you have planned next?
We did a PrerevolutionpersianglamPARTY last month which was so much fun! We might be doing a nativity play in December and we want everyone to get involved. It’ll be hilarious and loads of fun so if anyone wants to be involved please get in touch with us via Facebook

What’s your favourite Mariah Carey song. And if she were to do a country album, what would you like to hear her cover?
Hmm, I’m not much of a fan of hers but Heartbreaker is the only one I can listen to all the way through and enjoy.  I would love her to cover Please Don’t Go Topless Mother by Troy Hess. The clue’s in the title there.

YEE HAW is on 19th November at Vout-O-Reenee’s, in London
