Review: Sugar Rush

Great cover songs are beautiful things, especially when they are dramatically altered by those doing their own rendition. Loverboy adores a good cover and could probably DJ a full night of our absolute favourites (if you’re asking… do… we’re available…). Sugar Rush is a tape compilation that’s also available for digital download through Negative Fun Records and The Grey Estates, the latter a Pittsburgh-based, feminist music blog that Loverboy is more than a bit besotted with. They’ve been described as “the blog game Taylor Swift,” that is “powered by girl power and dreams.” Colour us smitten. Sugar Rush comprises glorious songs covered by female-led or gender-neutral bands. Highlights include Patsy Cline’s “Strange” by Claire Morales & Jena Pyle, The Cramps’ “People Ain’t No Good” by Mommy Long Legs, Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” by Boosegumps, Keel Her’s “Riot Grrl” by, Daddy Issues and – perhap’s Loverboy’s favourite though it’s extremely hard to choose from this wondrous comp –  TLC’s “Unpretty” by Sundae Crush. It’s available for pre-order for a 29th February release.
