Love Is…Zak Kearns

Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s Zak Kearns! To celebrate Loverboys arrival to North America, Toronto being our first stop, why not feature a sexy local in this instalment of Love Is. This Canuck cutie-pie sat down with our Justin Gray to discuss love, drag and trade on the road. Oh and if their Disney prince of a Prime Minister wasn’t enough to entice you to pack your winter coat and move over, Zak will definitely make you cash in your points and hop on the next thing smokin’

So tell us what you do for a living.
I’m currently working at a costume house as a wig stylist. However, I am also a headshot photographer and professional Musical Theatre Actor/Dancer.

You’re also a pretty stunning drag performer as well, what inspired you to start doing drag? And who/where do you pull inspiration from?
My first experiences in drag were in theatre when I played Mercedes in La Cage Aux Folles at Neptune Theatre in Halifax, Canada. However I’ve always been interested in make up and costumes since growing up as a dancer. It wasn’t until a couple years ago when I was on the North American First National Tour of The Wizard of Oz and I was in a little bar in Seattle and I saw the most amazing Grace Towers perform. It all clicked, I could be exactly who I was and still do drag and then everything changed.

Where has been the most interesting place you’ve traveled?
Being on tour through 25 US cities/states really let me experience queer culture through a broad scope. Places like NYC, Chicago, Philly and Seattle stand out as inspirational cities to me. Such diverse ideas/creativity and it was easy to cultivate ideas and inspiration.

Who are some of your instagram crushes?
Well my number one instagram crush would have to be my lover…
@Mr_J0el
he’s so supportive of me and my crazy creative energy and brain. As for instagram’s that give me life I’d say@cabenowlen
@kylekriegerhair
@jacobglaser
@iambranden
@thegracetowers

What the worst job you’ve had?
I’ve been very blessed to not have any jobs I really didn’t like. Most of my professional career has been on stage. One thing about being in theatre that I grew to not be a fan of, was being told how I had to look constantly and missing out on special events like first birthdays and weddings and long weekends with family.

What has been the most shocking thing someone has ever cold messaged you with on Scruff
When I was travelling through the US, I got some pretty frightening photos of people’s really damaged gaping buttholes, but I think I’m pretty hard to shock.

What’s your favourite prank to pull on someone?
If you leave your phone unlocked and unattended there will be selfies. I’m too scared to prank because I can’t handle the quick escalation. Like next thing you know I’m bald or beardless because some one chased me with clippers. NO THANKS.

Are you a Kelly Bundy or a Kelly Kapowski?
Kelly Mantle? Just kidding. I’d say Kelly Bundy, sometimes I just like to be blissfully dumb.You’ve traveled a bit for theatre, ever join the mile high club, or enjoy any bathroom romance in the airport?
Being single and on the road is very dangerous. You miss connection with people and you also have the ability to be no strings attached because you are literally only there for a glimpse. I do recall getting into heated conversations with guys in the airport, but being mostly all talk never followed through. Sometimes the idea is actually hotter than the deed.

What moment sticks in your brain as the most embarrassing moment of your life?
I honestly can’t think of one? I don’t embarrass super easily. I’ve fallen on stage, ripped out the crotch of my pants, even fell in the orchestra pit once. But I mostly just laughed my ass off about it.

For you, what’s the sexiest feature of a guy?
Eyes. If I can get lost in them, then it’s over… I MEAN BUTTS. Yea, BUTTS.

If you could only wear one article of clothing you currently own, what would it be and why?
I have a long red plaid cut off shirt that is really flowy. I call it my lumber dress. I always feel great in it. A perfect mix of masc for mascara.

On days off, what are you usually doing?
Youtube tutorial worm holes, browsing tumblr, playing with wigs/make up or going on a shopping adventure. Kensington Market, Dufferin Mall or Queen West….or in a speedo over at Hanlan’s Point (A beach located on Toronto Island).

What’s been the most romantic thing a guy has done for you?
Valentine’s Day this year. Me and my boy got in a huge fight a few days prior, things have been hard money and life wise transitioning from being a full time 8 shows a week performer to a new career path. Plus, my boyfriend had been struggle to find decent work in the city after moving here during pride of 2015 from Montreal. Anyway, he left me a little box with hearts on it. Inside there were tiny scrolls of papers, each of them had snippets of our conversations from texts, Skype and Facebook chats. We spent the first chunk of our time long distance, so it was so beautiful to be reminded of that new exciting love and to feel all those things again. It wasn’t something crazy or extravagant but it was us. Let’s just say I sat in bed weeping. It was perfect in the moment.

What has been the sexiest thing a guy has done for you?
Hmmm, the dishes? in a jockstrap? hahaha

Mariah Carey, what’s you’re favourite tune?
I have 3:
‘Heartbreaker’: because I love the video; the cut off band on her jeans, the easy choreography and that fight scene!
‘Fantasy’: because anytime I her it I just wanna dance my face off
‘Always Be My Baby’: because it always seems to cure those sentimental blues.
