Jinkx Monsoon: The Vaudevillians

Drag Race winner and superstar Jinkx Monsoon stars in The Vaudevillians and Loverboy’s Fallon Gold falls deeper in love with her hero.

I’ll come out and say it: Jinkx Monsoon was always my favourite Drag Race contestant. Her mix of sweetness, old school references, humour and softly saying to herself ‘water off a ducks back, water off a duck’s back’ when she faced the judges won my heart hook, line and sinker. So, when I saw that her show with Major Scales –  the Vaudevillians – was coming to The Soho Theatre I squealed with kweeny delight. And not only did it live up to my uber campy expectations it was – pretty much – perfection.

The conceit is that a 1920s vaudevillian duo were trapped by an avalanche in Antarctica, presumed dead. Now thawed out by global warming (for which they profusely thank their modern day audience) they face the world nearly 100 years later. All they have is their material that is strangely familiar to our contemporary ears…

The schtick is that Madonna, Britney, Gloria Gaynor et al have ripped them off by covering The Vaudevillians’ numbers decades after they were forgotten. The songs chosen are genius. They manage to take these classic pop tunes and make them sound straight out of the Charleston era. Jinkx and Major riff off each other as a couple who know one another only too well and who are barely tolerating the other’s existence. But as ones stranded in another century, what choice do they have but to continue plying their wares and gritting their teeth? The jokes come thick and fast and are expertly executed. They’ve had a few years to hone this show and it is simply faultless. They have taken some of the best songs ever and some of the worst (Four Non Blondes’ What’s Going On, I’m looking at you) transforming them into altered ear worms that will have you buck and winging your way out of the theatre and holding your sides where you’ve bust a gut. Jinkx looks immaculate, ripe and glorious. Excuse me whilst I take a moment to cool down… Major has the comedy gurning, asides and glances to the audience down to an art. The Vaudevillians quite rightly sold out in a nanosecond with new dates now added. If you can nab you a ticket you simply have to go and see this superb show with consummate pros taking us along for a magnificently silly, campy, very queer ride.
