Introducing…BB Diamond

We love a good rags to riches story – Cinderella, you shall go to that ball, hunty! And BB Diamond is offering us all that and more…ok, less so the rags part but still, starting off as a backup singer before usurping your boss and heading out on your own is pretty major. And with tracks like current single, ‘Feeling’ in her swag bag, it’s easy to see why she got plucked from the shadows and is now dominating that spotlight.

You were backing singer for Katy B & Jess Glynne. It’s rare backing singers make it out to being solo singers on their own. Was that something you always wanted to do? Or did someone suggest it?
For me I always wanted to be an artist, it was always the ultimate goal/dream. I got into doing backing vocals when my friend was playing keys for Katy and overheard she needed a backing singer. He suggested me, and luckily they thought I wasn’t too bad so gave me the gig! Ha ha! From that I then went on to work with Jess.
Doing BVs was an amazing experience and you get to learn so much. Plus Katy and Jess are both incredible artists who I’m a fan of so I was incredibly grateful to be part of their projects. Now doing my own thing though is a proper dream come true.

I know last year you were citing Michael Jackson as a major influence. Who has influenced your sound this time around? It’s got that 90s house piano sound to it…
MJ is very much still my main influence but I have a huge range of artists I seek inspiration from. I love 90s music, from the soulful house of Robin S and CeCe Penniston to the r&b of SWV, Brownstone, Aaliyah etc. I’m constantly inspired by old and new music so hopefully you’ll continue to hear different influences in my music along the way.

Who was the cute guy in dungarees in your new video? Can you hook us up?
Ha Ha! His name is Phillip Burchall. He’s an insane dancer and such a babe. I’ll try hook you up.

What does 2016 hold for you?
Hopefully lots of gigging. I’d gig every day if I could, it’s my favourite part of being an artist. I’ve got the next single lined up which I’m really excited about and maybe some features…who knows! I’m just really looking forward to the rest of the year.

Lastly what is your favourite Mariah song?
Ooohh tricky! I LOVE Mariah. I’d say maybe ‘Fantasy’, the vocals the music – aah man, that track just makes me want to dance and sing like no-one’s watching! I’m sure it has that effect on a lot of people.
